Owning an RV comes with lots of freedom and adventure, but it also comes with repairs that are sometimes unavoidable. But, a lot of the most common RV issues can be prevented with routine maintenance and scheduled inspections. Fully understanding what problems RV owners may deal with can help in preventing costly problems in the future.
Roof Leaks and Water Damage
One of the most typical RV issues is the roof leaking and causing water damage. Over time, even great seals can wear down and become cracked. Even tiny leaks can lead to very expensive water damage if they go unnoticed. Ensure to routinely check seals around vents, skylights, AC units, windows, and all of the roof edges. These are the most common areas that water damage will start to occur. If cracked sealant is found, be sure to properly reseal it or hire someone to reseal it if it is a larger area.
Tire Problems and Blowouts
RV tires experience a lot more stress on long drives than a typical car would. With the heavy carrying load and often very long trips it is easy for the tires to wear down. Worn tires, old rubber, and improper inflation all increase the risk of a tire blowing on the road. Checking the tire pressure every trip is one of the simplest and most routine ways to prevent problems. RV owners should also inspect the tires for cracks, uneven wear, and other common signs of aging. Even tires with seemingly good tread may need replacement sooner rather than later.
Battery and Electrical Systems
Dead batteries and electrical issues are another common cause of frustration for RV owners. Batteries naturally lose their capacity over time, especially if they are not properly taken care of during storage periods. In order to prevent possible electrical problems, keep batteries fully charged and always clean off corrosion from terminals. It is also very helpful to inspect wiring connection and test the electrical systems before long road trips.
While no RV owner can possibly avoid every single repairs, commons issues can typically be prevented through routine maintenance and scheduled inspections. Taking care of your roof, tires, and electric can reduce unexpected breakdowns and help ensure a safer and more reliable trip.
